School dog

Paddy is our school dog. He is a working cocker spaniel who has been in school since he was a puppy. He is an energetic, reassuring companion who listens without judgement, offers comfort without conditions and helps children find calm when they need it. Many pupils find it easier to open up when a gentle dog is nearby. Stroking a dog can slow breathing, reduce stress, and make it easier for children to talk about what’s on their mind.

A school dog also encourages responsibility and empathy. Children learn how to care for another living being, how to be gentle and how to read non‑verbal cues—skills that translate into their interactions with others. Even reading sessions become more enjoyable; many children feel far more confident practising their reading aloud to a dog who simply listens.

Paddy is gentle, friendly and well‑suited to a school environment. He is based in one of the offices so children always know where to visit him. When he moves around school, for example to go on a walk, he is always on the lead.
